Joe McCarthy is an instigator, connector and evangelist, interested in the ways that people connect technologies and the ways that technologies connect people.
Joe blogged regularly at gumption.typepad.com between 2004 and 2017. This WordPress site was hastily created before Typepad shutdown in September 2025. Perhaps the migration of the blog content to this new platform will prompt new blog posts.
Joe’s current professional title is Lead User Experience (UX) Researcher at Indeed. Earlier industry roles include Data Scientist at Indeed, Director of Analytics and Data Science at Atigeo, Director of Strands Labs Seattle, Principal Scientist at Nokia Research Center, Senior Scientist at Intel Research Seattle and Senior Researcher at Accenture Technology Labs. Other chapters of Joe’s career includes roles as entrepreneur, professor and consultant.
Joe holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, an M.S. in Computer Science from RPI, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Ripon College. In earlier chapters of his career, he authored or co-authored over 40 technical publications, given over 50 presentations, taught dozens of courses, and served on numerous conference and program committees..
